Everyday questions

Getting started & checking results

01 / AN EASY START

I want to start undervolting.
What do I need?

Getting started is simple: open Play and click one of the prepared UV profiles. This activates undervolting for your card. Play applies the saved settings for you.

You need a supported GeForce RTX desktop card, Windows 11 and Play. You do not have to create a curve or enter voltage values by hand to take your first step.

  1. 01 Click a UV profile
  2. 02 Launch a game
  3. 03 Compare readings

Launch one of your games and use telemetry to watch clock, voltage, power draw and FPS. See what the profile does on your card, and check that your game remains stable.

02 / NV-UV OR NV-UV PLAY?

I heard NV-UV needs Afterburner.
Does that apply to Play?

It depends on the app: NV-UV is the companion app for MSI Afterburner. Those two work together.

NV-UV Play is fully standalone. Play does not need Afterburner. Undervolting, profile management and telemetry are built directly into Play.

To get started with Play, you only need Play itself. You do not need to follow the instructions for the NV-UV companion app.

03 / COMMUNITY PROFILES · UV TRY

Found settings in a forum or on social media.
Now follow a tutorial?

The voltage and clock look promising. But before you follow a tutorial step by step, questions remain:

  • Which card were these settings for?
  • Where do I enter the values? Do I need to build a curve?
  • Will this be stable on my card? What do others say?

Already have specific settings from a forum or video? Enter them directly in Play: open UV Curve, select the suggested voltage and enter the clock. One click on Apply curve applies and saves the UV curve. You do not have to build it point by point. Test these settings on your own card too.

Prefer to choose an existing profile? Use profiles from the NV-UV community. UV Try preselects your detected GPU model. Compare profiles and choose a suitable starting point.

Import a profile into a slot, test it in your games and rate your experience. You do not have to create a curve by hand. The community helps itself, and the next person can benefit from your experience.

  1. 01 Choose a profile
  2. 02 Test on your GPU
  3. 03 Rate your experience

Results can differ even with the same GPU model. Ratings help you choose; stability still needs to be checked on your card.

04 / TELEMETRY & OVERLAY

How can I tell whether my GPU is undervolted?

You activated a profile, but what actually changed? The readings help you find out. Use Play’s built-in telemetry and show the values in its overlay while gaming. Alternatively, monitor them with HWiNFO or GPU-Z.

Clock · MHz
What clock is your GPU running under load?
Voltage · mV / V
What voltage is it using? For example, 0.950 V equals 950 mV.
Power draw · Watts
How much power is the GPU using? Keep an eye on FPS as well.

Compare the same game scene with identical graphics settings and FPS cap, once at stock and once with your UV profile. Lower voltage at a comparable clock shows the effect of undervolting. Lower watts at a similar frame rate makes the efficiency gain visible.

Low power draw alone is not proof: a lighter load also lowers readings. Idle readings therefore tell you little about your profile.

05 / STABILIZER

Undervolting.
Does it always have to be trial and error?

A profile works well until a game crashes the driver. Adjust clocks and voltage, then test again. Stabilizer takes over some of that follow-up work.

Play adjusts after a detected driver crash. Depending on the strategy, it lowers the clock, raises voltage or combines both. This works with game profiles and the global profile, within your configured limits.

Automation while gaming

06 / UV PILOT

My games have different requirements.
Do I have to switch every time?

An older title runs smoothly with a power-saving profile. A demanding game needs more performance, and you have tuned a custom UV curve for your favorite title. One profile does not always suit everything.

UV Pilot handles profile switching. Tailor your UV profiles to each game and assign them in the Game Library. When UV Pilot detects a game, Play automatically uses its assigned profile.

Find your balance between performance, consumption and temperature for each game, without switching manually before every launch.

07 / DCC

FPS capped.
Why is the GPU clock still so high?

You set a frame cap, but the card still runs at a high clock and correspondingly high voltage. Is that really necessary for your target frame rate?

This is where DCC comes in. DCC Automatic gradually finds a suitable in-game clock, taking performance and utilization into account. Less unnecessary clock speed can mean lower power draw and less heat.

DCC and Stabilizer are used alternatively. Results depend on your system; not every crash is detected, and stability still needs to be checked in your games.

For experienced users

08 / FINE-TUNING

I already know undervolting.
What does Play offer me?

Quite a lot. Adjust your own UV curve, use experimental advanced voltage settings or test your GPU with the Voltage Step Scanner. Check specific voltage points and explore suitable settings for your card.

Want to begin with a conservative profile for your own card? Auto-UV using the NVIDIA method derives a starting point from its factory curve. Save it to a profile slot and then test it in your games.

09 / FAN CONTROL

Can I adjust cooling and noise myself?

Want your GPU to stay cool while gaming without being unnecessarily loud? Open Fan curve directly in the Play main window. Choose GPU automatic control, a fixed fan setting or your own fan curve based on temperature.

This lets you adjust cooling and noise to suit your everyday use. Apply & save applies and saves your settings.

Fan control is still being improved. Zero Fan, meaning a complete fan stop, does not work yet.
